LA Water Supplier Restricts Yard Watering
(Los Angeles, CA) — Soon, Los Angeles residents will be restricted to watering their yards once a week. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is enforcing the cutback on June 1st. The decision comes down a water shortage emergency. The water supplier’s General Manager said “with this historic drought getting worse, we cannot afford green lawns.” ABC7 is reporting that some agencies will be hiring patrols to police watering and impose stiff fines.
Amid unprecedented dryness in a now three-year drought, the Metropolitan Water District calls for strict water-saving measures. The agency is restricting watering lawns to one-day a week for residents and businesses in Los Angeles, Ventura and San Bernardino Counties, affecting roughly six-million people who mostly rely on State Water Projects deliveries. The MWD says after the driest January through March in history, there is simply not enough water to meet the demand. The MWD says its member agencies will be responsible for determining which days watering will be allowed for its customers. Individual agencies can also choose to meet a pre-determined limit on the overall reduced amount of water use instead of the “watering one day a week rule.” Agencies that fail to meet reduction goals will be fined.
