(Sacramento, CA) — Some California lawmakers say one the mass shooting suspects shouldn’t have been on the streets. Assemblyman James Gallagher voicing his strong opposition. One of the suspects in connection to the deadly Sacramento mass shooting had been released early from prison in February despite prosecutors’ efforts to keep him behind bars. Smiley Martin had been sentenced to ten years for domestic violence and assault with great bodily injury. The Sacramento District Attorney’s Office argued against his release, urging the Board of Parole Hearings that Martin remain in custody. He is facing firearm charges related to the shooting. Assemblyman James Gallagher says these early release programs are putting community members at risk. Gallagher says the incident should serve as a wake-up call to policymakers.
