(Undated) — A new bill being considered in Washington would allow federal student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy. A Senate Judiciary Committee White Page on the Fresh Start Act says student loan debt is the largest debt in America after mortgages. The bill would allow federal student loans to be discharged ten years after the first payment is due. An undue hardship provision would continue for private student loans and federal student loans under ten years.
