A new report shows inmates are more likely to die of COVID-19 than the general public. A study by the National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice finds that the virus mortality rate in state and federal prisons is twice as high as in the general population. The infection rate in prisons is also more than four times the rate of cases per 100-thousand people outside of prisons. Officials say crowded conditions and inadequate resources are reasons why jails and prisons have been the source of some of the country’s largest outbreaks.
