A new bill to end bail and replace it with a controversial risk assessment system is headed to Governor Brown for his signature.
SB10 would make California the first state to completely end bail for suspects awaiting trial and would give judges more power to decide who is safe for release. Republican Assemblyman Travis Allen says it’s more of what’s wrong with Sacramento.
“It’s going to mean on net, we’re going to get a lot more criminals on the streets and then there is also the potential, but if we have somebody that’s innocent, that is brought in, they’re going to be stuck in jail for one month to 3 months and there’s nothing they can do to get out. The bill is a mess. It’s going to have disastrous consequences for California. Bail might not have been perfect, but it certainly kept us a lot safer than what we’re about to go through. Crime is already up in California, and it’s about to get a lot worse.”
