Donald Trump’s Attila the Hun campaign style has now burned down the entire Republican field of candidates. Now, Donald the Barbarian has a window of opportunity to remake himself in the minds of voters who’ve been turned off by his unruly rhetoric and vicious personal attacks. National Review columnist John Fund calls it Trump’s “golden moment.” “He has ten weeks – ten weeks! – between now and the convention to change his brand marketing, to change his style, to change his approach, to try to spend time with policy advisers and study, to reach out to groups, to try and figure out how to repair his relations with a certain female constituency…his Hispanic constituencies.
It’s rare that you get ten weeks for a makeover.” But will he do it? “We’ll learn if Donald Trump can mature as a candidate, or, if he likes his shtick so much, he doesn’t see any reason to change it.” Fund predicts that Trump’s vanquished opponent, Senator Ted Cruz, will eventually come around to support the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, not out of any regard for Trump but out of concern for the Senate elections and the need to keep Republican voters engaged.
