So you’ve turned to vegetarianism to improve your health. If you’re raising kids to be vegetarians, too, a new study has come up with conclusions that might disturb you. Cornell University researchers have found that long-tern multi-generational vegetarianism leads to significantly higher risks of heart disease and cancer.
In explaining the study, Dr. Dahlia Wachs said the scientists noticed that multi-generational vegetarians tend to develop a mutated gene that makes it easier to absorb essential fatty acids from plants. But the gene has a significant downside.
“The gene (also) causes them, when they currently eat vegetables and these kinds of foods, to make arachidonic acid and arachidonic acid unfortunately causes inflammation. Inflammation can hurt the heart and cause cancer.”
She added that vegetarians also have a higher risk of colon cancer and lower sperm count among males.
Dr. Dahlia was a guest on 790 KABC’s McIntyre in the Morning with Doug McIntyre and Terri-Rae Elmer.
